Think About It: Surf City, U.S.A.

At first it was a pipe dream, maybe conjured up at Pipeline. But now, it is official. Surfing will become a high school state-championship sport here in the spring of 2013. Kudos to state officials at the Board of Education and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association for figuring out a way to get this sanctioned. Yes, there will need to be fund-raising and the details on how to make this work will have to come together in short order, but could there possibly be a better high school event for local sports aficionados to call their own than surfing?

With the staunch support of many people, including Keith Amemiya, who did so many entrepreneurial things when he ran the HHSAA, the pieces have come together after numerous years of discussion. The professional surf community and other experienced wave riders will most certainly come together to help ensure that this great championship comes off with full funding and ample volunteer help18-months from now.

On a larger level, and as noted by Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz, perhaps the rapid nature by which this decision came together with a newly-appointed school board shows that issues need not flounder and sit out there for years and years due to political hurdles and concerns, but rather can be acted upon more quickly than in the past when solid, rational ideas deserve to see the light of day. So everyone into the water, as Honolulu will officially become "Surf City, USA" for high school board riders in less than two years. Think about it…
