Think About It: They See D.C.

To the surprise of no one, former governor Linda Lingle announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated next year by retiring senator Daniel Akaka. Alongside previously-announced candidates John Carroll, Ed case, and House representative Mazie Hirono, Lingle's entry adds intrigue and more, as this seat will become a focal point for both the Democrats and Republicans, as they look to retain or gain control of the Senate in 2012.

With Democrats having to defend more than twice as many Senate seats in 2012 than the Republicans, the race is on to see which party will end up with the majority of seats in the upper house of our national legislature. The local race for Senate has obviously caught the attention of national politicos- with Democrats looking to maintain control of a position it has held here for 45 years, while Republicans will look to two-term governor Lingle to break the Democratic stronghold in Hawaii.

And while Republicans locally have made few gains, if any, on the political scene over the past decade, even during Lingle's eight-years in office, Lingle is unquestionably a formidable foe, and the Democratic hierarchy will have to see her candidacy as a serious threat as its own candidates- Hirono and case- fight it out in the August 11 primary next year. Hawaii has a political race that will be in the national spotlight for the next 13-months; let the hyperbole begin! Think about it…
