Think About It: Affected by APEC

Are you ready for some traffic? No, I don't mean the run-of-the-mill Monday-Friday H-1 and H-2 tie-ups, I mean some blocked roads, no parking, restricted access frustration. Yes, it will be a bit humbug, but since the warnings about traffic during the APEC conference are going out over two weeks in advance, you can't say that you weren't warned.

Around the Convention Center? Forget it from 6am to 7pm November 8-11. Planning to snake your way around Ko Olina or the Waikiki area fronting Hale Koa? Think again. Along with the many plusses that come from hosting such a huge economic conference comes the reality that life will have to be adjusted for about a week. And it's not just on land- boats and beach access will be affected by the goings-on in Waikiki and elsewhere during the mid-November summit. And forget about H-1 or Farrington Highway on Sunday, November 13, as access will be restricted between Waikiki and Ko Olina.

Living on an island provides a slew of traffic woes to begin with due to limited arteries and a growing human and car population base. It's going to be tough to get around in Honolulu and on the leeward side for a week or so in mid-November. Hopefully, restrictions will not have major impact on emergency vehicles and other vital movement needs that simply cannot be planned in advance. But forewarned is forearmed, and yes, this is the price we have to pay to play in the big leagues of international diplomacy, even for a short time. Think about it…
