Think About It: High Rise, And Shine

The latest plan for a Kakaako development involves a public-private partnership that would build the tallest building, by far, in our state on Pohukaina Street. Assuming the proper public meetings are held and traffic concerns are addressed, work on this project could actually begin in February. That's right, a project that actually has a visible start date, not some pie in the sky, five-years down the road project like we have seen far too often when development is suggested or guaranteed.

Affordable units, office space for public service entities, high-priced apartments with clear views to the mountains or the oceans- it all seems too good to be true. And in the past, for various reasons, it has been too good to be true. Yes, there are objectionable parts of the plan, like high density, traffic issues, disruption on surrounding businesses, but no project comes to fruition without some headaches in the planning or along the way to completion.

Our downtown looks somewhat stunted due to the fact that no building is taller than 438 feet. If this project comes to fruition, don't be surprised to see more of these types of projects popping up in the metro Honolulu area over the next generation. If we truly want to keep the country country, if we truly want to end the endless traffic heading into town, these types of projects are going to be essential, as the public and private sectors look to solve problems of a growing population base and limited available land. Think about it…
