Think About It: Holiday Opportunities

What will you do differently this holiday season in Hawaii? What will you do alongside the normal gift-giving and party-attending that becomes almost rote year after year. Don't get me wrong; these annual rituals have their place and are important in reaffirming the value of friendships and family relationships. But we can all do more.

Maybe this is the year that you'll find the time to share your time or make a donation to someone or some entity truly in need. Maybe this is the year that you'll find the desire to spend a few hours helping at a non-profit or working the backroom at a special event for those less fortunate. Maybe you can buy a few $5 gift cards to a juice shop or a coffee nook for those in need. Maybe this is the year you'll take a dozen extra cans of food over to the Foodbank, or a bunch of unwrapped toys to one of the Toys for Tots locations. Maybe this is the year you'll take some extra time to jot down your heartfelt thanks to certain people and send them a brief, but personal, note.

Maybe you'll write a note to yourself to reinforce what you hope for and will do- not just will try to do- in the coming year. Maybe you'll stop and say "thank you" when you see a member of our armed forces at a restaurant this holiday season. Maybe you'll even buy him or her dessert. For you see, when you do good things, you feel better about yourself- and that's a fair trade off. It's been a tough year in many respects. Do something this holiday season that makes people feel good, including yourself. Think about it…
