Think About It: Railing on Rail

Here we go again. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit, or HART, will take heart and review the finances of the company assigned to build and operate our supposedly forthcoming rail system. Also, a court case begins this week in yet another legal battle over the rail project. Some are suggesting the whole project was politically driven, and not traffic driven. Some are saying the voters were bamboozled when they approved the concept.

But one thing is for certain. Your commute is not going to get any easier or less stressful in the years ahead unless something is done. Whether it's some form of rail system, the purchase of 300 express buses with more routes, or a double-decker toll road, something has got to be done to ensure that we are all not sitting around in some of our nation's worst daily traffic day after day. The stress of traffic is not just the driving, or sitting, itself. It is the hours of lost sleep and the rush to get on the road in time. It is the rushed breakfast eaten on the run.

Traffic also results in people stressed about being late going to work or school and getting to appointments. Our options are limited, on every island, by the very dynamics of living on an island. There are only so many arteries that can be made available for people to get from point A to point B or C. But as the bickering continues and our federal deficit keeps inching upward, you have to also wonder at what point do approved funds start to dry up, thus resulting in the unenviable position where we simply forfeit our ability to put some form of mass transit on the roads due to our inactions. Over $300-million has thus far been spent on this rail project. One way or another, we should find out more this week, and you can always listen to the riveting updates as you read "War & Peace" in your car while in traffic as the kids sleep in the back seat and you put make-up on the bags under your eyes. Think about it…
