Think About It: Home Schooling

On February 23, 2000, I did an editorial about the fact that education of our keiki begins at home- with the parents. Over 1,245 editorials and 12-years later, that concept and hope hasn't changed, it's just that some of the players have changed. Some of the kids of 2000 might soon become parents or might already have become parents. And hopefully, they will see that the attitudes toward school at home can go a long way in helping out with a system that is ripe for change.

As Hawaii stands dangerously close to losing some, if not all, of its Race To The Top money due to intransigence and the status quo mentality that is partially to blame for the woes of our public education system, there is also a large responsibility that rests on the shoulders and in the hearts and minds of the parents of school kids. As the holiday vacation ends, now would be a great time for parents to get excited about the new term, to make sure they show interest in their kid's efforts, achievements, progress, and growth in the hallways of our schools.

While parents can possibly help to improve the system by demanding more and focusing the legislature's attention, they can most assuredly stay actively involved in making sure their kids have the right sense of why it is important to be prepared, thorough, disciplined and conscious with school and homework.  Make a difference now in your own kid's life through your interest and involvement. The system may fail our school kids in too many ways, but their parents don't have to. Think about it…
