Think About It: Ship To Shore

There was a great story last week about the three visitors from Canada who were rescued from the sea by a container ship that was in the area and heeded the "SOS" call. Many people involved did smart and even brave things to make this sea tale a happy one. The huge Horizon ship came to the rescue, the brothers in the ailing sailboat used satellite phones, strobes and life vests, and little West James held up hope and his head until they all got pulled on deck.

And as soon as the story broke, with the ship's captain confirming just how merciless the sea was that night, you could hear the mad scramble of agents, book writers, movie honchos, and magazine editors heading over here to grab a piece of the action. A movie for the ages! A cover story that might pre-empt a celebrity divorce or meltdown! Nine-year old West James' diary- the mobile app, coming soon to your phone! Saga at sea- the imperfect storm, sharks lurking and licking their chops! You know the hyperbole.

Wouldn't it be nice if once in a while, heroic efforts and good stories that arise from bad circumstances had their day in the sun, and then quietly faded off into the sunset? Is it possible that this lucky threesome will go back home to Alberta and resume normal day to day lives and recount the story a few hundred times to curious friends and neighbors. Or have we reached the point where everyone who does anything of note, good or bad, is made a celebrity? The best news is that these guys made the local and international news by avoiding what could have been a tragedy. Can we possibly just let it go at that? Think about it…
