HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A car thief who beat a convicted murderer to death inside the Halawa Correctional Facility in 2009 was sentenced to an additional five years in prison Wednesday.

James Gouveia was originally charged with manslaughter, but pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of assault. Monte Young, 46, died after he was punched multiple times in the prison recreation yard.

Young was serving a life sentence for beating a man to death with a hammer at a fast food restaurant in 1997.

Gouveia will start his new sentence after he completes a five-year prison term for auto theft.
