Think About It: Christmas Spirit-less

You've heard of the Grinch who stole Christmas? Well, locally we now have the gremlin who stole Christmas. Some moron or morons stole copper wire from Makiki District Park last week, forcing the cancellation of the annual Makiki Mele Kalikimaka last Saturday afternoon. Last year's celebration at the park was also cancelled- due to the furloughs in place- which affected planning. You have to hope that some local elves with entrepreneurial spirit can come up with some community fun for the keiki of Makiki, after this copper caper shocking development. It's just too bad the copper thieves didn't receive a shocking development of their own for their transgressions.

And then there are the "we've-got-nothing-better-to-do" vandals out by Old Kona Airport at Kailua Park on the Big Island who mixed concrete and human excrement and poured it down a few toilets and put a Super Glue-like substance in the park's gate locks while also breaking a few sprinkler heads, according to Hawaii County officials. Boy, what a fun day that must have been. Just think about the intricate planning that went into deciding how to cause such elaborate destruction? What a clever way to draw attention to yourself. I hope you tripped on some copper wire on your way out of the park.

Desperation, personal and/or financial woes, boredom, bad hair day- whatever it is that causes people to ruin things for others is tough to stomach by the 99% of people who get it. In this season of giving, let's hope someone gives these people what they deserve- a long period of time away from the outside world in which to reflect upon their actions. Bah humbug; Happy holidays, fellas! Think about it…
