Think About It: Lava Lessons

I noticed with some interest the other day a headline on CNN.com which said, "Lava enters subdivision in Hawaii." And I thought how strange that single sentence must look to most web readers, like lava was some sort of invasive intruder. It's all about perspective. Locally, we have become a bit numb to the endless flow of stories about the endless flow of lava from Kilauea over the past few decades. It's dangerous and beautiful, devastating and hypnotic.

But imagine how unique that single line must have seemed to the web denizen in Topeka or Tuscaloosa. Not much lava flowing elsewhere in this country. It simply reminded me of just how unique so much of what we have here in Hawaii really is vs. what goes on in the rest of the country and the world. A melting pot of people that mostly get along quite famously together with a plethora of environmental extremes from lava to rainforests to black sand and coral reefs to snow on mountain tops to the wettest spot on earth.

We should never take for granted the unique nature of our nature- both human and otherwise. When you live in the midst of it, sometimes it's hard to step back and really cherish what we have here. It's easy to get caught up too often in the mundane aspects that do make up the human experience without having a bigger perspective while we're still breathing. So maybe this holiday season is a good time to appreciate more than just giving and receiving gifts. As your life flows, enjoy the lava flows around you. Think about it…
