MANOA (HawaiiNewsNow) - One University of Hawaii's key middle blockers will not return for the 2012 season.

UH women's volleyball head coach Dave Shoji announced that Brittany Hewitt will forego her final season with the Rainbow Wahine.

"This has been a really tough decision to make, but after discussing it with my family, I have decided not to play my final season," Hewitt said in a press release. "I love every part of this program and I am so thankful for the impact the players, trainers, coaches, and fans have made on my life and for all of the memories. This is just something I need to do for myself.

Hewitt is expected to graduate in May and spent three seasons with the team.

During her sophomore year, she was named AVCA Second Team All-American and CVU.com Blocker of the Year. She was also a two-time First Team All-WAC player and was the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2009.

"We're disappointed that Brittany won't be with us for her fifth year, but we wish her well in her future endeavors," Shoji said in a press release. "She has brought so much to the program in her four years here and we are thankful for her contributions. She has been a model student, a leader on the court, has amazing character, and will be a success in anything she chooses to accomplish."

Although it will be hard to fill Hewitt's shoes, Shoji says this gives other players an opportunity to gain more experience.
