Think About It: Race Pace

The clock continues to tick on the Race To The Top funds from the U.S. Department of Education. Losing these funds would not be the end of the world, of course, but you might actually be able to see it from here. We are in the ninth month of the HSTA/State of Hawaii labor dispute, spending of the early Race money is slow, as there have been administrative snafus and other issues which have held things up. Federal Race To The Top reviewers will be here in less than two weeks, and persons in the Department of Education seem comfortable is saying that real change IS being made.

What's important here is that the changes being offered and pushed are real change, not just hollow words. Every year we hear someone pontificate about how our keiki are our future, how education is important, how early planning can make a lifelong difference. Really. And yet for years and years, what exactly has been done to help push the agenda forward in making sure we don't annually rank among the state cellar dwellers in educational accomplishments and breakthroughs?

Maybe the Race To The Top stress and the newly-chosen Board of Education can help to transition our public education system and start to make a difference. At the same time, maybe more parents will get more involved at home and in their respective schools, too. There are no simple answers, but please, politicians, spare us the simple and vapid statements about caring about our keiki and their education. Let's get things done with quantifiable goals in short order. This Race To the Top is part of a marathon, but let's see some sprinting to give us hope. Think about it…
