Think About It: Principals with Principles

It only took eight years since the reform was first legislated, but it looks like we finally have a basis for evaluations of principals in the public schools, beginning in full in the 2013 school year. An agreement was reached with the HGEA last week that will help to provide guidelines, expectations, and training to ensure that we have accountability, opportunities for rewards, and also the chance to admonish non-performers, if they exist. That's how performance appraisals, when done right, are handled in most job situations, and if we expect those running our public schools to help us improve our schools, identifying details in expectations on evaluations on a regular basis is a must.

The HGEA, rightfully so, wants to make sure the DOE can provide training and assistance as needed. Likewise, let's hope the evaluations have the necessary teeth to ensure that action is taken- both good and corrective. As for the teachers and their evaluations, well, who knows. There has been no agreement between the HSTA and the state for nine months, as the days and months plod on. Just like with the school leaders, a fair system needs to be put into place to also look at teachers' professional performance, growth, and results. And no, it doesn't have to take eight years to come to fruition like the principal evaluations, but it just might end up there the way things aren't going right now. Think about it…
