Think About It: Groundhog Duh

Remember the movie "Groundhog Day", where actor Bill Murray kept reliving the same day over and over. Well, sometimes doing these editorials and looking at what's going on around us makes me feel like we live in a series of perpetual "groundhog days" in Hawaii. Bad enough it took eight-years to finally get some form of educational evaluation for school principals, but now we learn that there is still a court case coming up to challenge the constitutionality of the re-drawn voting districts set up throughout our state. The big question is whether or not the Big island will gain a Senate seat that Oahu would lose.

The burning issue is how district lines were re-drawn and whether or not the state must include in its count the 100,000+ military personnel, their families, and out-of-state students. I don't know the answer to this one, but I do know that Hawaii is not America's first state to have non-permanent people living in its midst. So why there are not ample case studies and previous tests to quickly decide this merry-go-round issue is frustrating, but perhaps not that surprising. Here we are, less than four months from our primary election, and many voters and aspiring politicos don't know where to stand, literally, because their districts are still up for grabs. The good news is that judges will get this worked out in time for the over 70% of eligible local residents ages 18 and over to not vote as is the norm here every two years. And frankly, those numbers are the saddest part of this outcome- people simply not participating. The minority picking the winners; that's how we do it here. Think about it…
