Think About It: Lama Logic

For those who were lucky enough to attend, the Dalai Lama most assuredly made quite an impression when he spoke here recently. His messages of tolerance, happiness, respectfulness, empathy, and accountability actually don't sound that far off from our vaunted value of living aloha.

So why is it so difficult? Why has human discourse become so inhumane, so personal, so attacking, so vitriolic? Well, there's ego, pride, self-assuredness, insecurity, desire for power and control, and about 20 other human foibles that prevent us from all simply getting along. When people think they are so right in their opinions and when people believe they are justified to prove they are right with might, bad things happen; check the history books.

The arrogance of people in power under the cloak of supposed religious or political superiority is astounding and troubling. The fact that some of the very same people who would dare to impose rigid dogmas and absolutisms on how we should live our lives are people who actually cheat on their taxes, cheat at golf, cheat on their wives, and/or cheat in the workplace is baffling. How about if more people who adhere to this quote from the Dalai Lama: "Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them." Simple, straightforward, practical, and yet apparently so very hard for so many. But it's a good goal, even in Hawaii. Think about it…
