Think About It: Contract Contact

Along with being befuddled and cynical, you can now throw amazed into how many people feel about the latest chapter of the HSTA/State of Hawaii contract negotiations. However, I am not sure "negotiations" is an appropriate term, since abstinence and e-mails have been the norm over the past four months since the public teachers of Hawaii resoundingly rejected a contract proposal highly-endorsed by their own union.

The teachers said "no thanks" by a two to one margin and now the union heads are suggesting that the teachers just need a bit more information and re-education to make the right decision and approve the proposal. Ah, but not so fast. The governor's office now says that the attorney general has determined that the January offer is outdated and is off the table, and thus a new agreement will have to be constructed and voted on.

So, we have some teachers angered that they are being asked to revisit a contract that they never liked in the first place, union hierarchy saying the old deal will be just fine once more information is shared, and the state saying the old deal is dead, it's time to work out a new deal. One can only imagine how this will play out with decision-makers in Washington, D.C., as they decide whether or not to yank back the $75-million in federal Race To The Top money that is in jeopardy. If it wasn't all so sad, this might make for a great movie, like "The Three Stooges." Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Think about it…
