Think About It: Traffic Sigh-tations

We're #1, but it's nothing to brag about this time. It seems that, according to an Inrix Incorporated study, Honolulu has now surpassed Los Angeles as the most-congested city in the country. Yes, our traffic really is that bad. The study estimates that we all waste almost 10-minutes a day, every day, or 58-hours a year stuck in traffic. But that sounds strange. I don't know about you, but I would be happy to be stuck in so-called "traffic" for just 10-minutes a day. Other cities with little movement on the roads include the usual suspects- New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Boston, and Chicago.

This study might become a poster child for the rail supporters, but it will allow us to brag to our friends about just how cosmopolitan we really are out here in paradise. After all, most people perceive Honolulu as a beautiful city of great beaches and really nice people. The concept that we actually work here and slog through traffic day after day must still shock many people who don't know much about O'ahu beyond its beaches and colorful drinks with umbrellas in them.

But yes, there we are, day after day, stuck in traffic in town, heading leeward, windward, to Hawaii Kai or to central Oahu. And just like a bad day on L.A.'s 105, New York's Cross Bronx Expressway, or Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway, Honolulu simply has too many drivers and too few lanes on too few arteries. And while it doesn't solve our daily driving dilemma, it is nice to be recognized for being a leader… well, sort of. Think about it…
