The people spoke in Manoa, and they got what they asked for. After waiting for over 30-years from the first discussions, Manoa has a wonderful newly-refurbished public library. With solar panels, tempered glass, and a catchment system, as well as other green initiatives in place, this new facility is a wonderful renovation that many people can be proud of- like the residents, the employees, the builders, and the legislators who pushed the project through over the past 15-years.
And yes, if you build it they will come, for while far too many people are wrapped up in miniaturized technology that keeps them pre-occupied and often times frazzled, there still is a sanctuary where people can browse, research, read, learn, listen, dream, create, and chat quietly in appropriate places- and almost everything is either free or low-priced. Hopefully, this newly re-done facility will show a younger generation the value of such an edifice, while at the same time happily serve the needs and dreams of those already quite familiar with what a library can provide.
So kudos to everyone involved in making the new Manoa Public Library a reality for everyone to share for years and years to come. The input of the community and the strong efforts of politicos, designers, and builders led to the creation of a modern day repository that should serve as a model for other public/private efforts statewide. Oh, and please leave your cell phones off when you enter. Think about it...
