Think About It: Over-Sears

In the midst of retail uncertainty, again, and concerns about job creation in the near future, there is one player that keeps swinging for the fences. Ala Moana Center owner General Growth Properties announced that it will be replacing the Sears' store in 2014 and beyond with more major retailers, small stores, and restaurants. Talk about "general growth"…

And it won't just be replacing the long-time retail tenant. It will be doubling Sears' footprint with over 350,000 square feet of more stuff, extending the Sears' site all the way out to Pi'ikoi Street.  So if you thought that concerns about another recession settling in or a continued lethargy in the economy would slow down this mega-mall, think again. Ala Moana Center has grown up, literally, adding stories and stores, and now it is really going to grow out. If you've watched the growth of this incredible hulk, you may have wondered "when will it end?" Obviously, not yet.

While many mom and pop local shops have been displaced at the mall over the years, many other local shops have been able to stand side by side with trendy shops and stores that have initials and accents in their names. Obviously, the only thing that seems to preclude the mall from continuing to grow will be load-bearing weight as the pillars go up and the escalators go in. It may not be your mom's old Ala Moana Center, but it is a bit inspiring to see an entity locally planning so big and so confidently as others eke out their rocky subsistence in the new world and local economy. Think about it…
