You may have missed it, hopefully not. Last Saturday at 2pm local time the international keepers of time on this planet added one second to the official clock. Yes, one second. It seems that the earth rotates on its axis now about two milliseconds slower than it did 100-years ago; yes, Mother Earth is slowing down and dare I say it- becoming an old lady, I guess. Old man time, meet old lady earth. So the timekeepers add a second every once in a while to ensure that the sun hits its highest point at exactly noon.
But the big question is: did you take advantage? We all know people locally who say "oh, if I only had more time"… well, now you've got it. Yes, it might seem small, one second added every few years, but think of the possibilities. More time to do those things you want to do, less rushing around, more focus, more quality time, less time wasted on excuses, tweeting, texting, and e-mails, which probably take up way too much time. And it is your time. And no one ever lay on his or her death bed, surrounded by loved ones, and said, "You know, I just wish I'd spent more time at the office".
So maybe we don't need atomic clock watchers to help us do a better job of personal timekeeping. Maybe we should realize that we do control our own time and our choices of what we do with that time. We do decide what we do and what we deem too important to miss. And if you find yourself regretting what it is that you don't do, who it is that you don't see, and maybe even where you don‘t go, then maybe it's time to fix your watch… literally. Think about it.
