Think About It: Registration Reminder

Thursday is the deadline for registration for those people who would like to vote this year and aren't already registered. While the number of registered voters has increased over the years, the percentage of eligible citizens who take the time to vote has gone down, and we now have the distinction of being arguably the worst state in the country when it comes to making our vote count, based on turnout numbers over the years.

Voters this year need to be aware of redistricting before they head to the polls in August and November. Or, people can request a mail-in ballot to make things really simple, easy, and so more people can avoid the "I'm just too busy" excuse. The Office of Elections website can help you to find out where to vote in your district or help you to get an absentee mail-in ballot. While the Saturday, August 11th primary this year offers major races including the Congressional and Honolulu mayor categories, our track record here indicates that only about 40% of registered voters will even bother to participate in this vital selection process.

Apathy, disinterest, distrust, lack of distinction between candidates, bad hair day, there are all kinds of excuses why people don't vote or don't even bother to register. Hawaii could adopt day-of registration to help encourage action, whereby voters could register at election sites on Election Day, but that doesn't seem to be a priority to help overcome our ho-hum attitude regarding the process of citizen input in our democracy. People are willing to die for the right to vote in foreign countries, but for well over half of our eligible voters here, they're just too busy to be bothered, and that's a shame. Think about it…
