Think About It: Bus Stops

As usual, blame is being passed around after last week's announcement that budget cuts at the Department of Education will force school bus service to be eliminated for over 2,000 students. Over 100 routes involving 51 schools will be affected unless something is done, soon. The Board of Education, in its annual quest to make do with less funding, is having to make tough choices. Some in the state legislature suggest that the governor should release emergency funds, the governor says he can't simply release money every time someone thinks a crisis is at hand, and the affected parents are angry about the way the information was disseminated; just another sad saga of bureaucracy  and money woes.

As usual, the victims in this will be the students, some forced to walk in areas with no sidewalks or intersections that could be dangerous. We talk year after year about education as if it matters, and then we repeatedly chip away at or ignore the very infrastructure that has to be in place. No books, reductions in summer school programs, no circulating air, repairs done at a snail's pace and now, no buses for some.

We ask a solemn, now-appointed Board of Education to work magic and move our public education system forward without the funds to even keep up with day to day needs. The system needs resuscitation, and a start would be that money has to come from somewhere else in the government coffers. Our keiki don't get to vote for the people in charge; they are merely the pawns for the kings and queens who make decisions. Maybe that's why their issues are so slowly dealt with year after year. Think about it…
