Think About It: The Best System Weʻve Got

Lots of money is being spent by pro-rail advocates to make a point. Lots of big bucks are being spent by outside partisans to get you to believe one point of view or another. And lots of talk is peppering the airwaves about the value of experience vs. a fresh start in a decaying D.C. And now, you get to decide, you get to make the choices, you get to have your voice heard in the primary election on Saturday.

Winston Churchill astutely said: "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." And the way we encourage democracy is to vote for those people we think can do the best jobs to move our communities and our country forward in an increasingly complex world. Sure, there are many things that could be changed or at least re-evaluated within our systems of governance, and some day some group with some influence might suggest that we actually revisit that 236-year old document that guides our day to day lives, but for now, we as citizens need to do our part and actively participate in the process.

It is by no means a perfect process, but even with its flaws, it is a dynamic process that requires our attention and the minimal time it takes to show up and vote. Perhaps someday in the not-too-distant future, the elected grown-ups and sensationalistic pundits will stop efforts to constantly divide this country into red and blue and realize that there is a lot more purple throughout this country where civility and rational thought are the daily norm. We vote this weekend, and we expect and deserve better. Think about it…
