Think About It: The Value of Showing Up

These may be the so-called dog days of summer, but what if you're a cat fan? It doesn't seem fair does it? Then again, cats get nine lives, so feline fans can stay positive in these stifling warm days. Moving on, it's nice to read and hear all the plaudits and positive vibes about our local sports teams as the seasons are about to begin, but let's not delude ourselves into expecting undefeated seasons and then express disappointment when the college kids go through realistic growing pains in the first month or so.

A key and contributing factor to the success of local teams is fan support. We cannot devolve into a town where we only come out when our teams are at the top of the standings. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case in far too many instances. Whether it's due to being too busy, apathy, the price of tickets, the economic realities of not going out as much, or other factors, let's not see this town atrophy into a place where only the hard-core (usually older) fans show up week to week, and the casual fans become even more casual.

We need support for our high school teams, UH, and small college teams in order to help these teams fund themselves. We all take great pride when local athletes shine on the national or international scene, so we need to make sure we continue to support the local sports scene through our attendance and contributions- in football, junior golf, tennis, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, etc. The life lessons learned in sports are vital in the development of our kids. Let's make sure we realize this fact by being there in force, and not just in spirit. Think about it…
