Think About It: Tunnel Vision (At Least For Now)

Hawaiian Airlines continues to expand with more routes to more cities; Walgreens locally is adding yet another location next month; there is a new shopping center soon to be opened in Ewa Beach. Target is looking at more locations with a Kailua store set to open next year. Yes, there are signs of growth here within a struggling economy, as many retailers and business entities continue to see light at the end of the tunnel. What may be most important to keep in perspective in this slow-motion recovery is that it is simply that- a slow-moving recovery.

Gone (at least for now) are the days of automatic annual 5% economic growth and the promise that things will always get better. Gone (at least for now) is the absolute assurance that the next generation will have a better go of it economically than the generation that preceded it- and that's pretty much unprecedented over the last 75-years.  Companies have found out how to make do with less and still reach lofty profit goals, and that does not bode well (at least for now) for a sudden resurgence in hiring. Maybe when the perception becomes a reality that the load has gotten too great on the work force will hiring take place in greater numbers.

People are more cautious in their spending, which may not feel great in terms of personal wants and satisfaction, but it sure beats piling up onerous credit card debt and the feeling of always being behind. So, yes, there are signs of light at the end of the recession tunnel. But the light is not necessarily huge or bright just yet, and the tunnel is certainly turning out to be a long one. Think about it…
