Think About It: UH “Lack” Attack

Lack of leadership, lack of accountability, lack of autonomy, lack of trust, lack of letting people do their jobs, lack of responsibility... there are all kinds of "lack" that have become apparent as the situation at UH becomes apparent and transparent. It was also difficult to watch as some interviewees were asked to explain further about personnel issues which have no right being exposed in detail or specifics over the airwaves, in public, or on-line.

While UH personnel are employees paid for by state taxpayers, and while this is a public institution and we all hear over and over about the public trust, an employee's internal discipline issues or problems that might result in lawsuits or unnecessary embarrassment should not be aired in public. Thank goodness the questioning senate committee backed off some of those probes. When all is said and done, can a new athletics director really feel secure that his or her judgment will be accepted in personnel matters, in business negotiations, in day to day job requirements? Can a system which allows and seems to encourage second-guessing and micro-management really assure the new hire that he or she will be given plenty of space? If not, then hopefully that will be plainly laid out as a job expectation- to be pushed, bullied, influenced, or cajoled by regents, upper UH management, Bishop Street, special interests, and the legislature, not to mention fans, coaches, and the NCAA.

I believe that no job in Hawaii is more high profile or subject to such Monday morning quarterbacking as the UH athletic director's position. And now, as if we didn't know, we have been reminded that there is plenty of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning and afternoon quarterbacking that comes into play. Tough job, tough times, tough road ahead; now is the time for true leaders to reassure the public through actions. Think about it…
