Think About It: Hughes The Boss

One man's passion is another man's angst. Maybe that's not a proverb, but it might be the reality when looking at the planned real estate development in the works between downtown and Ward Avenue. The new plan for Ward Village, as it will be called, includes over 4,000 residential units and up to 22 buildings that would house retail, restaurant, entertainment and living units. Yes, this will most assuredly shake up the waterfront and the downtown to Ala Moana Center area over the next 15-years, if it all comes to fruition.

As always, when we hear of projects like this, questions arise about infrastructure- water and sewer lines, parking, traffic, density, community interaction, etc. And there are the inevitable issues surrounding ancient burial sites. But it looks as if the owner of the area, the Hughes Corporation, is sensitive, aware, and talking out loud about these issues before they become headaches that slow or stop the project. Imagine that, covering one's bases before boldly going forward; if only that had been the case with H-3, the Superferry, Big Island developments, and rapid transit.

If this $8-billion, 15-year project does result in a rebooting the Kakaako area, it might provide a template for other entrepreneurs looking at other areas of development or re-design throughout these islands. After all, we only have so much room in places where there are perceived economic opportunities, and with groundbreaking planned for 2014, let's hope this massive project continues to progress openly and realistically in the years ahead. Think about it…
