Think About It: State Of Disrepair

Hawaii is a land of beauty, without a doubt. Along with beautiful people, we have some of the most amazing sites on the planet. So why is it that so much of our infrastructure is simply awful? Streets in a state of seemingly endless constant excavation, an airport that has more yellow tape and barriers than suitcases, park building in general disrepair, etc.

I just came back from a trip where I was in airports in two metropolitan areas and those airports were sparkling. Signs were clear, lighting was consistent, and there was a sense of quality in all areas- from gate areas to baggage to concourses. Why must our Honolulu airport always look like it's getting a facelift, yet never seem to finish? And once you leave the airport, pick an artery, any artery and rumble along. Nimitz Highway, Ala Moana Boulevard, the Pali Highway, Kapiolani Boulevard, all in need of attention or getting attention with far too many metal grates and uneven surfaces bulging out for far too long.

We have a world class destination here with a third world look when it comes to our infrastructure and while money is always an issue, getting things done right in a timely manner should be a first class priority. The unsightly blight that is many roads, public buildings and airports makes you wonder what the upcoming rail terminals and depots will look like 15-years down the road.  Think about it…
