Think About It: Food For Thought, and Love

Nowadays, it's hard to get through a week without hearing about some new ranking list- best beaches, best hotels, best foods, best movies, most beautiful left-handers, etc. One reason we see so many such lists is because of the millions of websites that purport to be experts in providing such illuminating charts. Last week, provided us with their list of the 100 most-romantic restaurants in the U.S., and Hawaii graced the list 10 times, more than any other state not named California.

Of course, if you a romantic at heart, you know that a clever lighting scheme and a lounge lizard behind the piano bar do not necessarily make for a romantic setting. If you got engaged at Joe's Diner & Service Station- whose slogan is "eat at Joe's and get gas", that would probably be considered a quaint, truly American place of love in your heart. There is a real difference between a romantic restaurant and a romantic dinner- a lot depends on the company you keep, the ambience, your mood, your server, and the actual meal.

I have dined at so-called class establishments and unpleasantly revisited the meal for two days. I have eaten at lush restaurants where the food portions looked like postage stamps- which some consider hip. I have seen people eating at family diners who held hands and made good goo eyes all night long, thus qualifying as romantic. This, of course, was long before cell phones ruined the mood at many meals for far too many people. But it's always nice to see yet another list where Hawaii ranks high- just like the lists of best beaches, on time airlines, hotels and resorts, and vacation destinations. Now, if we could only move up on some top-places-to-do-business lists. Think about it…
