Think About It: Words of Wonder

A couple of well-known people here apologized publicly last week. "Hawaii Five-0" actor Scott Caan, while interviewed on "Chelsea Lately", a caustic cable comedy show, responded to the host's comment about how the food in Hawaii isn't very good by saying that food here "sucks", then agreed with the sarcastic hostess about how there is "a lot of crystal meth" here, suggested that everything here "is very slow-motion" and that "surfing in Hawaii is more like survival". While some of the comments were possibly tongue-in-cheek, it seemed more like foot in mouth, especially by the time we heard the fourth cheap shot. What might be perceived from these comments is that perhaps Caan got dinged in the head one time too many through the years by his surfboard. Just kidding, of course…

And then there's Gary Okino, a former Honolulu City Councilman whose candidacy for the Ethics Board of Appeal was withdrawn by Mayor Kirk Caldwell after Okino made it know how he feels about homosexuals and homosexuality in no uncertain terms during the interview process. Ethics Board candidate- really? Astoundingly, even after Okino's insensitive self-revelations, City Council members voted 7-0 to move his nomination forward. In his apology, Okino talked about treating people with "…the love, reverence and dignity that they deserve". This reversal came just days after he said to the querying committee members, "I have no tolerance for homosexuality."

When people of note say things directly and publicly, and then quickly claim that they meant no harm or their words were taken out of context, it falls upon us to render our own decisions about the quality and integrity of these people. With very few exceptions, we should be intolerant toward intolerance of others, no matter who slips up, babbles without thinking of consequences, and then tries to cover it up quickly. Think about it…
