Think About It: Go ‘Bows… er, Warriors!

The University of Hawaii Athletics Department finally consolidated the many names used for its team and will move forward with two monikers- "Warriors" for men's sports and "Rainbow Wahine" for women's sports. I remember a memo that came out about a decade ago which listed different names for as many as six different sports. It was a marketer's, and fan's, nightmare, and it has been correctly amended for all future reference.

Yes, traditions die hard, but keep in mind that before its teams were known as the Rainbows or Rainbow Wahine or Rainbow Warriors, the UH teams were known as the Fighting Deans a hundred years ago, until local reporters saw a rainbow appear as UH upset Oregon State and started referring to the team as the "Rainbows". There are other schools that have dual nicknames for men's and women's teams, and schools that have confounding mascots or nicknames, like Alabama with its "Crimson Tide" nickname and "Big Al" elephant mascot. Or the Auburn Tigers who rally behind their battle cry of "go War Eagles!"

At the end of the day, consistency and uniformity are key factors in branding and marketing a product, company, or team. So while the shouts of "go ‘Bows" will undoubtedly continue at UH events, and history is hard to just shake off, the time has come for loyal fans to go somewhere over the rainbow and move forward as we support our Warriors and Rainbow Wahine. Think about it…
