Think About It: Concert Connection

Country star Alan Jackson just held a successful concert at the Blaisdell Arena on Sunday night, and the inimitable Carlos Santana is in town for shows this week on Oahu and on Maui. It's great when top national and international acts bring their songs to Hawaii; we just need to see more of them. Local sensation Bruno Mars recently announced a domestic concert tour, and at the present time, Hawaii is not on the list of his summertime stops.

The reason as to why major artists don't often perform in Hawaii as often as they used to has to do primarily with money- the cost of shipping stage sets and props, the cost of flying out a large entourage, the cost of the downtime between Hawaii and the next stop on the tour. It's much easier to travel cross-country with vans than it is to load up a plane or two for a special show here. Plus, we have venue limitations, with nothing available on Oahu between the 8,700 seat Blaisdell Arena and the 50,000 seat Aloha Stadium.  While many top acts can command a crowd of 15,000 or 20,000, that number of tickets would require two nights (and more cost) at the Blaisdell or Stand Sheriff Center and for the biggest acts, 15,000 or even 20,000 fans at Aloha Stadium simply wouldn't cover all of the associated concert costs.

So while we happily accept the artists and promoters that still find a way to make it work here, we also pine for the good old days when top acts would play three or four nights of sold-out shows on O'ahu or fill Aloha Stadium when multiple acts performed for hours during a weekend afternoon and evening. We may be in a new era of mobile dexterity, but watching someone's YouTube cell phone camera shots of mainland concerts just doesn't provide the same buzz of witnessing a live show in paradise. Think about it…
