Think About It: Happy Hawaii

A recent Gallup well-being poll shows Hawaii to be the top state in the nation for the fourth consecutive year. People here are apparently pretty satisfied with their lives, their physical and emotional health, and even liked the places they work in. The ranking is based on year-round surveying of 353,000 respondents throughout the country, with about a thousand people here included in the annual tally.

While the results may not be a surprise to those of us who live here and find ourselves smiling more often than many of our mainland compatriots, it was interesting to note that other states at the top of the happy and healthy list include Colorado, Minnesota, Utah, Vermont, Montana, Nebraska, and New Hampshire. So there is certainly no warm weather geographical skew to this survey, as balmy days or access to an ocean are obviously not criteria for how people feel and think about their daily plight in life or their sense of personal satisfaction.

As a matter of fact, looking at the states listed right below us, you might think that a predominance of cold weather, snow, and hours spend indoors are facets that make people happy; but perhaps they just work and live around those subjective discomforts in these content states. Nonetheless, it's nice to be #1, it's nice to be here, and it's nice to be nice and happy, which Hawaii people are as a rule, also confirmed via tweets that were aggregated for this study, too. But we knew that anyway, didn't we? Think about it…
