Think About It: They’re Baaaack…

They're coming from everywhere, and that's good news. More visitors from more places means the tourism industry is literally spreading the wealth, which bodes well if one area suddenly contracts or if the airline lift- or total number of seats coming and going- drops off. They're coming from Taiwan and South Korea as well as from Japan, from New Zealand as well as from Australia. The east coast business from the mainland is strong, and those visitors actually spend more than west coast travelers here.

And with more seats and markets come more opportunities for the valued business travelers, along with more meetings and conventions here. With retrofits at many Waikiki and Neighbor Island properties in recent years, the guest experience at hotels should be better than ever. And a vibrant tourist economy is obviously the biggest indicator of a strong local economy in the months and years ahead.

When times are tough, some argue we need to diversify our tourism industry- give ‘em new reasons to come here. When times are good, everyone relaxes a bit and smiles. But we really do need more plans for recreation, eco-tourism and new activities, while making sure that the infrastructures are sound on our roads, at our parks and beaches, and in our hotels. When it comes to tourism, looks like the surfs up, and the waves of visitors should be rolling in for the foreseeable future. Think about it…
