Academy of Hawaiian Arts (Kane)

Composed by the late Kumu Hula Edith Kanakaʻole, this chant honors her birthplace and acknowledges the love-hate relationship between Pele, the volcano goddess, and Kamapuaʻa, the pig god. The dynamic conflict between these deities of fire and water created the cinder hill of Kaʻuku which remains as a testament to Pele's invasion into Kamapuaʻa's territory. Pele pursues Kamapuaʻa into his forested regions only to be squelched by hidden springs made by Kamapuaʻa's footprints.
