Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka (Wahine)

Published in the Nūpepa Kūʻokoʻa in 1862, this beautiful mele is one in a collection which was composed to lament the change of the kingdomʻs capital from Lahaina, Maui to Honolulu, Oʻahu. Maui Island is honored with the mention of a rose lei and fragrant maile of the uplands. The composer, S. D. Kauoha, expresses his attachment for Mauiʻs notable features and in poetic language he hints of the presence of a loved one.
