Academy of Hawaiian Arts (Kāne)

This name chant or mele inoa honors King David Kalākaua. It served as the compulsory mele kahiko for the kāne division in the 1980 Merrie Monarch competition. For tonight's performance, it has been set to music and crosses the divide from kahiko to ʻauana. The Academy of Hawaiian Arts offers this mele bridging past and present and pays tribute to the legacy of the Merrie Monarch in chant, mele, hula, and music.
