No tsunami for Hawaii after 6.5 quake near Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake shook an area off the coast of Papua New Guinea, but was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 6.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake happened at 1:14 p.m. The quake was at a depth of 21 miles.

Last week, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Papua New Guinea but no major damage was reported.
