Think About It: L.A. Goodbye

I was driving around the other day, going from point A to point B about 15-miles away. The drive took 40-minutes as traffic inched along and the ride was bumpy on bad roads no matter which way I turned. Interestingly, I was in Los Angeles, which ranks right up there with Honolulu for the honor of having the worst traffic in the country. What amazed me was just how bad the roads were on L.A.'s major thoroughfares- La Cienega, Wilshire, Sunset, Santa Monica, Beverly- they all provide free auto and body massages with your drive.

A big issue of consternation while I was in La-La Land was the inordinate amount of time that a repair job on the 405 Freeway was taking, not to mention the huge cost overruns. I noticed attendance problems at an LA Dodgers' baseball game, where even late arrivals got in on the bobblehead giveaway, which is usually used as an inducement to get more people to show up early. The team recently sold for $2-billion, and the announced attendance far exceeded the number of bodies in the stadium on a beautiful spring night.

I dined at well-reviewed, reasonably-priced, trendy restaurant just off of Sunset Boulevard, avoiding panhandlers and ignoring the stench of marijuana and urine as I walked to and from my car. Does all of this sound like a normal day on H-1, an under-attended UH football game, or dining downtown off of Hotel Street? Perhaps, but I'd rather have our issues here rather than deal with the unending sprawl, unrelenting cement, and unwieldy social issues of LA any day. L.A.? Nice place to visit, but even with the societal frustrations we know of and live with here, lucky you live Hawaii. Think about it…
