Think About It: Voyage For The Ages

The Hukule'a is off on a planned four-year voyage that will take it to ports both near and far. This living, breathing, floating masterpiece will soon celebrate 40-years of covering the earth in a quest to both learn and teach.  The lessons that the crew brings with it and leaves behind are an interactive method of showing people the intelligence, culture, and aloha that these islands represent.

We often talk about being ambassadors of aloha when we leave these islands and go to the mainland or travel to other countries. When Hawaii exports its wonderful stories- through hula, music, aloha spirit, and discovery- it lets people know that while we are the most isolated inhabited land mass on the planet, the essence of Hawaii and its people are very special, and while a noted local trait is humility, there are lessons that can be learned by people who look deeply into the culture that those of us who live here are so used to. Sometimes, we take it for granted.

The southern and circuitous route to be taken by the Hokule'a from now into mid-2017 will explore new places and meet new faces in South America, the Pacific Rim, Africa, and the eastern seaboard of the U.S. mainland. What an experience for the canoe's voyagers and those wide-eyed on-lookers who will see the vessel for the first time. With messages of taking care of people, the earth, and the ocean, this trip and the Hokulea's website components will have amazing value for everyone involved. We should all give thanks that such a vehicle exists- on the open ocean and in the minds of everyone who comes in contact. Think about it…
