Think About It: Dental Dis-Appointment

While Hawaii dentists support fluoridating our water, the issue has now been on the backburner for years. Unfounded fears about supposed detrimental effects or people concerned about the government telling us what should go into our water apparently take precedent over the common sense status quo found in the drinking water of every other state in America. The only places on Hawaii with this treatment are on military bases, and surely those people know something about safety and paranoia.
So what to do about the fact, not theory but fact, that Hawaii has some of the worst issues in the country when it comes to dealing with cavities and decay in our youth? Study after independent study over the past 40+ years has proven the value of fluoridating water supplied in city after city around the U.S… but not here. And now another effort to provide preventive dentistry has been brushed aside by the legislature - a plan to allow dental hygienists to place dental sealants, a proven decay-preventive measure.
The bill died due to questionable logic about hygienists needing supervision. My hygienist works on my teeth unattended every six months, so perhaps there is a financial reason why some don't want to see this logical procedure allowed. Talk to your legislator- ask him or her what they plan to do to stem this continuing bad practice of ignoring our keiki's teeth, the history of which continues to lead to bad statistics and bad teeth. Something's rotten here beyond a vocal lobby's bad breath or legislative laziness. Think about it…
