Think About It: Spiraling Stairway

It's only been about 26-years of waiting, so let's hope that the Honolulu City Council can render some opinion and final decisions on the Haiku Stairs soon. Or the council could wait another 26-years, thus matching the time frame on a decision on the Waikiki Natatorium issue, and the so-called Stairway to Heaven will simply continue to deteriorate and maybe fall apart, which might really limit access. Case closed!

Last week, visitors got lost looking for the 70-year old Stairs. Others have been known to sneak up there before sunrise and before the guard comes on duty to politely tell people to go away, that the Stairs are not open to the public. One website blogger bragged about sneaking past a sleeping guard. The city pays over $50,000 per year for the security detail. Local Kaneohe residents don't like the intrusion in their neighborhood and yards. People get cited for trespassing, people get lost, and yet the Stairs are still there, somewhat guarded, and people are still willing to take on a security officer, darkness, possibly surly neighbors, and Mother Nature for the chance to witness the panoramic views from on high.

At a late March meeting of the Honolulu City Council's Parks Committee, it was decided that various council representatives would take a hike to the trail, to help them render an opinion. Why it took until 2013 for that idea to arise is stunning. It's now late-June, and nothing more has been done, but it's been that way for years, and this scenario is symptomatic of far too many local issues that get pushed aside rather than dealt with for fear of angering some constituent base. People are elected to make decisions, not avoid them. In the classic song, "Stairway To Heaven", Led Zeppelin told us not to be alarmed "…if there's a bustle in your hedgerow". Well, before someone falls, dies or gets attacked in the wee AM hours, let's react to this bustle in our hedgerow now and figure out what to do about our very real Stairway to Heaven. Think about it…
