Think About It: Fruits Of Our Desire

I was driving up a street that had a bit of an uphill incline the other day and there were no other cars or people around. Suddenly, I noticed a lone mango rolling down the street by the curb. I thought, how unique, to see a piece of live fruit rolling along, like it was on its way to the store or a movie. And then I started to think about how lucky we are to have items like mangos, papayas, lychees, guavas, lilikoi, and other succulent products that we enjoy year round in Hawaii.

Now pondering our local fruit options might not seem like a worthwhile endeavor, but it sure beats texting and driving, and I did keep my focus on the road while my thoughts drifted to a quiet morning with an indulgence of chilled papaya and a splash of lime. I actually prefer papaya to mango. And I realized that while I love vacationing on Neighbor Islands and enjoying the hotel service provided along the way, I really should start more of my work mornings by savoring a local fruit of choice rather than rushing out the door with a sugar-drenched yogurt cup or store-bought smoothie in a bottle.

Now I know this may not be my heaviest topic of the year, but having these delectable tropical treats so readily available is just one more reason you can say "lucky you live Hawaii". And as for the mango meandering its way down the street when I drove by the other day, maybe he or she was just out for a walk. By the way: know how do you make a mango shake? Take it to a scary movie. Think about it…
