Think About It: Bike Right-ers

Maybe it's just timing, but I see more and more bicyclists on the roads and paths around town these days. And that's great; some people choose to ride for exercise, while for others, pedaling a bike is an economic decision.  And the rules of the road are pretty clear that even if there are rules of the road, cars rules. That goes for bicyclists as well as pedestrians. Having the right of way but getting clipped is a lose-lose scenario for the victim and the driver, and the victim is usually the worse for wear, of course.

Too often I see bicyclists dart through traffic, much like too often we see people rush our between parked cars to dart across the street. To save a few seconds or a minute, people don't think. And thus they appear willing- consciously or not- to put their lives in the hands of hopefully-savvy and attentive drivers. And this is a big mistake. And I always love how the bike rider at fault for weaving will give you stink eye for almost hitting him.

Riding on our roads is a two-way street, literally. It requires attention to the road and attention to the rules by all parties involved- drivers, riders, and walkers. Drivers trying to rush through intersections when lights change, trying to cut corners before traffic approaches, or changing lanes with no notice present hazardous moments for all. Clueless or thoughtless pedestrians and bicyclists should not add to the insanity by trying to shave seconds. Saving seconds might not save your life, so be careful and not clueless when transporting yourself around town by car, bike, or foot, please. Think about it…
