Think About it: Mighty Murph

When someone's job description lends itself to acts of bravery and courage, it's hard for these people to see themselves as heroes. Just ask any military war veteran, police officer or fire fighter. "I was just doing my job" is the likely refrain when asked about acts of bravery and putting them self in harm's way. Now Antoinette Tuff, a school bookkeeper who talked a hostage-taker in an Atlanta-area school into putting his weapons down- she's a hero.

So how do you define heroism or heroic deeds?  Well, I would like to offer for your consideration under the term "hero" one Don Murphy. Yeh, it's a different kind of hero, but here's a guy who, alongside his incredible and equally hard-working wife Marion, runs a single Irish bar and restaurant in downtown Honolulu. Yet year after year, event after event, good ole Murph is out there working his tail off, organizing, cooking, serving, and donating food and time. You want to talk about the aloha spirit? Don Murphy could be a poster child. Whether it's his recent Pigskin Pigout for the UH football team, his efforts serving sliders at the Sony Open or other golf events, his meals donated to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, his Merchant Street outdoor fundraisers for children's cancer research, the list goes on and on, year after year.

He is a booster of local life, not just local sports. He is a living treasure, a bona fide hero who people count on to help them meet their financial goals and/or to help them provide a quality event. So next time you're thinking about where to grab a bite downtown, show some love to a guy who radiates aloha and humbly does his thing for all of us time after time. Visit Murphy's Bar & Grill, where the food is great and the employees are wonderful, and go see a real life living, local legend. Take your kids; show ‘em what a hero looks like. Think about it…
