Think About It: Air Fair

Why is it taking so long to remedy some of the heat problems in schools throughout the state? Over six years ago, the legislature looked at a plan to provide air conditioning in all schools, but that proved to be a bit too expensive, and would also require infrastructure changes and upgrades at far too many schools. And years before that, dust and heat concerns at island schools made headlines. Slowly, some areas and schools have seen upgrades of late- ceiling fans and/or air conditioning in some classrooms.

But why are we still having this discussion in 2013? How about portable floor fans to alleviate the problem while a better solution is finalized? How about photovoltaic where it makes sense- logistically and financially? How about some community leaders in areas with hot schools getting together with a few local businesses and akamai graduates of afflicted schools to provide floor fans or look into attic fans where feasible?

Imagine being asked to learn and contribute at your job every day in 90+ degree heat. The DOE cannot simply turn on the cool at hundreds of needy schools, but perhaps this is a case where public and private concerns can get together to expedite solutions without red tape or expensive and time-consuming engineering studies and electrical retrofits. Yes, archaic electrical systems and huge potential costs make solutions tough. But for goodness sake, let's not hear this same tired tale year after year. It's tough enough to move our schools forward; let's not let any more hot air be yet one more excuse. Think about it…
