Think About It: North Shore Shirking

If a meeting was held, and no one showed up, would it still be a meeting? Well, a meeting was held a week ago in a crowded North Shore school cafeteria, and a lot of people showed up. So, yes, it was a meeting. But no one showed up from the State Department of Transportation, the people who control the road fronting Laniakea Beach and who could really make a difference for frustrated local residents. The traffic situation has been awful on the North Shore for years when surf events take place or when sea turtle sightings drive hundreds or thousands of people out to this beautiful area, both locals and tourists, spectators, turtle fans, and surfers.

While discussions have been on-going for years, and while everyone has expressed frustration over people parking poorly and darting across the street precariously, there is still no solution in sight. The local area state representative and other officials assured the crowd that their voices were being heard, but people want to know when definitive action will be taken. The DOT says it will meet on the issue soon. While barricades go up in certain areas, some in the agitated crowd wondered why there seems to be no urgency to develop a long-term plan to restrict access or provide peace of mind and safety in the neighborhood.

The state has concerns about liability issues if it takes action, but who will be liable right now if an accident takes a life? Shirking responsibility on the single artery and on the beaches is not an answer. A beach park adjacent to Laniakea Beach was proposed… two decades ago. Sea turtles can live for well over a hundred years, and a real solution for North Shore traffic reduction and safer access points for interested turtle and surf gawkers might take that long to appear. Ducking one's head into one's shell is not what officials were elected for, no matter how tough a situation appears to be. Think about it…
