Think About It: Shoji Scores

It's been a couple of weeks since UH's Dave Shoji became the winningest Division I women's volleyball coach of all time. With over 1,100 wins and counting, there are some amazing things to ponder when you look back at just how Shoji and his program have remained so rock solid for almost 40-years. Winning four national titles is pretty impressive, but throughout the past four decades at the Wahine helm, Shoji has proven his mettle year after year often times with undersized, under-recruited players. He is the consummate strategic game coach.

Competition throughout the country has heated up in the women's game over the past 20-years, yet Hawaii has remained in the national title picture, with numerous trips to the final four along the way. In the 1970s, there was Hawaii, a handful of California schools, and maybe Utah State or BYU that threatened for a national title. Nowadays, there are upsets weekly and more 20 quality teams than ever, so to compile the incredible conference records and national results that Shoji has been able to compile year in and year out is a real tribute to how he's honed his skills as the quality of competitive teams has grown more widespread.

As a non-BCS or so-called "major" athletic school, UH does not have recruiting tools that schools have in the Pac-12 and elsewhere. But it does have 6,000 fans nightly, and here we are again, with Hawaii right near the top of the rankings chart in 2013. Will this wins record ever be broken? Probably, by Penn State's coach Russ Rose in the year after Dave finally calls it quits. But the manner in which Dave Shoji has led so many student athletes to so many wins, the thrills he has provided for two generations of wahine volleyball fans, and his humble, tactical, street-smart methodology- those traits and skills will perhaps never be duplicated. So enjoy this legend as it continues to grow right before our transfixed eyes. Think about it…
