Think About It: Brew(ery) Ha Ha

Often times in Hawaii, we see things don't get done swiftly and we simply accept it. Repairs, actions that need to be taken, we simply shrug our shoulders, shake our heads, and accept "that's just the way it is", as Bruce Hornsby once so eloquently sang. But every once in a while, you hear a story that goes beyond the sublime and dips into the ridiculous realm.

Such is the story of the old Royal Brewery in Kakaako. Check this one out- a 1996 renovation to the historic building cost $2.5-million, but the horrible fumes emanating from wood fixtures were so bad that the new tenants moved out… and the building has now simply sat there for 14 years- uninhabited and unfixed, which is certainly unacceptable. What's the point of earmarking a building as a historic landmark if no one can go inside or use the place?! Oh, and by the way, the state owns the property, which was built 113-years ago.

The new, approved repair work will take 18-months and will cost $6.1 million- all because some termite-treated, smelly beams and floors need to be removed, but haven't been removed for over 14-years. This building being empty isn't new, as the Honolulu Star-Advertiser noted last week that it also sat vacant for over 30-years in the 1970s and 1980s. The Royal Brewery is worthy enough to be considered a landmark, but it has been a royal, and empty, sore spot for far too long, and the government has no one to blame but itself for this one. And many will simply shrug their shoulders with no indignation and say "so what else is new." And that's the real problem that doesn't appear to be going away time soon. Think about it…
